MATCH OF THE DAY MAGAZINE ANNOUNCES PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARDS FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP, LEAGUES 1 AND 2

Match of the Day magazine has named its best players of the season in the Football League with Glenn Murray of Crystal Palace being named Player of the Year, Championship, while David Cotterill, Doncaster was named Player of the Year, League 1 and Tom Pope of Port Vale Player of the Year, League 2.

According to the judges: “Murray’s 29 goals are the reason Palace have been in the top five since October and they’ll need him in top form for the Play off campaign.” In Division One Cotterill was commended for contributing a “mind-boggling ten goals and 20 assists so far”. Meanwhile on Port Vale’s star striker Pope, the judges said: “With 31 goals, only Lionel Messi has scored more league goals.”

Championship Young Player of the Season was Tom Ince of Blackpool awarded for 18 goals and 13 assists. Championship, Manager of the Year went to Malky Mackay of Cardiff. “Top of the division since November they’re the exact opposite of a one-man team.” Young Player of the Year, League 1 was Brentford’s Adam Forshaw with Eddie Howe of Bournemouth named Manager of the Year, League 1 for a run that saw them transformed from relegation candidates to promotion contenders in a “remarkable run of 22 wins from 33 games.”

Young Player of the Year, League 2 was Britt Assombalonga from Southend with Gillingham’s Martin Allen named Manager of the Year, League 2 for the Gills being in the top two for the whole season.
