Writer, BBC Match of the Day (£27,000)

About the role

You will be joining the UK’s best-selling football magazine, the official magazine of the iconic BBC TV show, and the biggest children’s publisher in the UK. You will become an integral part of a talented, award-winning team which prides itself on producing original, high-quality content to entertain, inform and educate tens of thousands of young football fans across the country.

As a writer on BBC Match of the Day magazine, you will;

  • Produce engaging, accurate copy that is appropriate and compelling to the readership in the brand’s house style and tone
  • Source suitable, relevant and engaging images
  • Along with the rest of the editorial team, come up with content ideas for each issue
  • Attend planning meetings to contribute ideas and to discuss content and format of issues
  • Create engaging social media posts for the BBC Match of the Day magazine X and Instagram accounts
  • Be a passionate champion of the brand, ensuring that BBC Match of the Day magazine constantly delivers the highest reader experience
  • Liaise with schedulers, programme makers, production staff and talent to ensure that magazine content is current and relevant
  • Attend football matches, events and functions to represent the magazines as directed by the senior team, often after work or at weekends
  • Interview footballers, BBC talent, influencers and more, as required
  • Keep up to date with football news and pop culture trends
  • Organise content opportunities, such as interviews, by sourcing, developing and liaising with relevant PRs, agents and brands
  • Be prepared to appear on BBC Match of the Day YouTube channel and social channels
  • Manage magazine competitions, sourcing prizes and liaising with relevant stakeholders such as legal/marketing/licence holders
  • Liaise professionally with editorial contributors, including the processing of invoices
  • General administrative duties
  • Look after visitors and casual workers (organise IT/systems access and security passes), liaising with facilities/IT/switchboard as necessary
  • Handle enquiries via phone, email and social media, using initiative to deal with queries and referring other queries to the relevant editorial staff or relevant departments
  • Oversee and manage the magazine email inbox for MOTD, plus other titles within the Youth & Children department
  • Assist with other magazine teams within Y&C according to the opportunities and demands on the team and teams (this can include picture research; photographing covermounts; helping with customer complaints/issues; making things for pre-school magazines; helping with reader research; and setting up competitions)

Requirements

  • Be passionate about everything to do with football
  • Have an encyclopaedic knowledge of football – from the lower leagues to elite level
  • Previous experience of working on a football channel or youth magazine is desirable
  • Be creative and bursting with positive energy
  • Knowledge of and experience on social media platforms, specifically Instagram, X, YouTube and TikTok
  • Can demonstrate a clear understanding of our readers, how they use children’s magazines and apps and how they absorb information
  • Knowledge of media law is desirable
