About the role
As a Podcast Editor, you will lead the strategy, production and editorial execution of the HistoryExtra podcast portfolio. This role offers the opportunity to shape and grow a wide-ranging suite of high-profile podcast channels, featuring daily episodes, long-form narrative storytelling, and innovative new series.
The Podcast Editor will oversee a growing podcast slate including HistoryExtra, HistoryExtra Long Reads, History Behind the Headlines, and the History’s Greatest series, while also driving the development of new formats and content strands. This is a highly collaborative role, working cross-functionally with editorial, video, digital and commercial teams.
As a Podcast Editor, you will;
- Lead editorial planning, production and delivery of the full podcast portfolio, including:
- HistoryExtra Podcast (5 episodes/week)
- HistoryExtra Long Reads (weekly)
- History Behind the Headlines (twice monthly)
- History’s Greatest series (Cities, Conspiracy Theories, Battles, Scandals)
- Define editorial strategy and direction for new and existing podcast strands
- Manage tight content workflows to ensure consistent, high-quality output
- Executive produce new creative podcast series, including external partnerships
- Conduct and edit in-depth interviews with authors, academics and experts — often handling sensitive topics with care and editorial rigour
- Write, record and edit scripts and episode descriptions in line with brand tone
- Review and approve content produced by others to ensure editorial and technical standards are met
- Line-manage and mentor the Content Producer (Podcast)
- Lead podcast editorial meetings, assigning work and managing deadlines across the team
- Collaborate with teams across print, digital and video to create cross-platform content
- Contribute to BBC History Magazine, HistoryExtra.com, YouTube and social media channels
- Work with commercial and marketing teams to grow subscriptions, secure sponsorships, and drive audience development
- Develop editorial strategies that support audience growth and the wider membership model
Requirements
- Proven experience in editorial leadership and audio production
- Strong interviewing skills, with the ability to tackle complex or sensitive topics
- Excellent writing and editing skills, including scripting and voiceover experience
- Familiarity with audio editing software e.g. Descript, or similar
- Ability to manage high-volume content workflows under tight deadlines
- Understanding of audience development, podcast growth strategies, and subscriptions
- Experience managing or mentoring junior team members
- Comfortable working cross-functionally with commercial, marketing, and editorial colleagues
- Knowledge of BBC editorial guidelines and experience applying them would be an advantage
- Passion for history and making it accessible to a broad audience
