BBC Good Food announced today (Thursday 26 October) the results of its Christmas Supermarket Taste Awards, judging the best festive products from 13 supermarkets across 18 categories, from smoked salmon to Christmas cake, mince pies and cranberry sauce.

The full results are in the iconic BBC Good Food Christmas issue which goes on sale today (26 October) with a “Make it Meaningful” message, packed with trusted and thoroughly-tested recipes for edible gifts to share and Christmas bakes to impress.

For the BBC Good Food Christmas Supermarket Taste Awards, 185 products were blind-tasted by an expert panel, overseen by an independent adjudicator. All packaging was removed and food prepared and cooked following pack instructions and presented by an independent home economist. The judges submitted comments and a score out of 10 for each product in the category via anonymous online judging forms.

Aldi won the most, scooping five of the 18 categories: best pigs in blankets, best gammon, best alternative Christmas main, best cranberry sauce and best Christmas cake. Lidl was awarded four wins including: best smoked salmon, best vegetarian main, best vegan main and best biscuit tin. Waitrose won two of the sought-after mince pie categories – best classic mince pie and best flavoured mince pie, while Sainsbury’s won best gluten-free mince pie and best Christmas pudding, as well as best gravy. Asda came top in the best turkey crown category.
